Spring 2024
Grania: Pirate Queen
Co-directed by Scott Potter and Ali Odlin, Vivid Motion Dance’s spring show tells the tale of Grania “Grace”
O’ Malley, a woman born from a seafaring western Irish clan who becomes the most feared chieftain and pirate captain of the Irish seas. Her spirit and passion for adventure are representative of the country that she eventually finds herself struggling to preserve.
Family, friends, and foes alike ebb and flow with the tides that she sails—all while she and her people fall under the lengthening shadow of the English Empire. Grania eventually comes face to face with the formidable Queen Elizabeth, her greatest rival…and perhaps the only person who could understand her.

Summer 2024
Eclipse & Helen of Troy
Auditions Saturday June 1, 2024 | 9:30-11:30am | check back for more details!
Created by #vmog MJ Emerson, Eclipse uses dance to intertwine the stories of Alice in Wonderland, the Prodigal son, and a War Veteran coming home. This one act show is a favorite of the Portland community! Using music from Dark Side of the Moon, Emerson creates a stark look at the way people's lives and stories connect.
Emerging director Arrin Rhinehardt brings the story of Helen of Troy to the stage with original dance pieces in this one act show. Telling traditional stories from the perspective of those most harmed, the rage of the victims and the gods' pettiness inspires Helen to recruit rebels to fight against the patriarchal God hierarchy. February 2024
The Moorings of Mackerel Sky by MZ
They say Mackerel Sky was founded when Captain Burrbank first saw Nimuë the Mermaid and forgot the sea. Stricken by love, he moored his tall ship and made camp on the highest cliff, hoping to forever gaze upon her beauty. That camp became a settlement, the settlement a town, the town a community both blessed and cursed by their tempestuous affair.
Three hundred years later, the legend of the Mermaid and the Captain who loved her still invigorates and haunts the inhabitants of the small Maine lobstering town. In this close-knit town famous for its infamous mermaids, community is built through love and lore—willful elements that the townsfolk will have to harness if Mackerel Sky is to endure for another three hundred years.
Vivid Motion Dance is proud to bring these stories to the stage through new dance works inspired by MZ’s debut novel, The Moorings of Mackerel Sky. See it live and go home with your own copy of the book!
Shows Tuesday February 6, 2024 at 7pm and 9pm at The Hill Arts (formerly St Lawrence Arts) *one night only*
Tickets: $45 adv / $50 door | All Ages
All tickets include a signed hardcover advance copy of the book!

April 2024
HeartSpeak & Down The Rabbit Hole
HeartSpeak We dance to express, to connect, and to feel. To paraphrase Ruth St. Denis; dance is the body speaking a truth that is often too deep for words alone to uncover. Co-directed by Beth Alexander & Jessica Jane Means, HeartSpeak is a collection of new works connected by the theme of how dance heals us.
Down The Rabbit Hole The White Rabbit’s life of order and routine is suddenly turned into chaos with a familiar realization that “I’m late for work!?!” Follow director Gerry Shannon’s White Rabbit into a world of unexpected madness, with crazy encounters and being chased by a curiously annoying young lass as we fall deeper, dancing Down the Rabbit Hole.
Shows April 11-13, 2024 at The Hill Arts
Thu 7:00pm; Fri 7:00pm; Sat 2:00pm and 7:00pm
