Vivid Motion is Seeking a New Artistic Director

This is a volunteer position.

Vivid Motion is a non-profit dance company based in Portland ME, founded in 2003. We produce three mainstage shows each year and are involved in other events in the Portland area. We also offer pay-what-you-can classes throughout the year. Vivid Motion is committed to making dance accessible for audiences to watch and giving dancers opportunities to perform. We believe that everyone is able to dance and dance well.

The primary role of the Artistic Director is guiding the vision of the company by choosing concepts and directors for mainstage shows, choosing teachers for our classes and discovering events and festivals for VM to participate in.

The AD connects the organization with the public and with the dancers through a number of avenues, including social media and electronic communication, keeping company members informed about upcoming and in-progress productions and ways in which they can volunteer.

The AD is in charge of scheduling shows, reserving performance and rehearsal spaces and finding or maintaining sponsorship for these spaces. Additionally, the AD works with the directors, producers, and design staff of each show to support them and connect them to VM resources.

Each year, the AD sets forth a plan to the Board of Directors that details intended shows, other events, and information on classes and workshops, and works with the treasurer to make budgets for these shows and the year in general. The board votes on the proposed season and budgets to ensure the company mission is being followed and the budget is fiscally responsible.

Our ideal candidate will love dance, be organized, enjoy working with people, be willing to approach organizations and businesses to find performance opportunities, and be invested in helping the company succeed. The candidate will need to have good managerial skills as all of our workers are volunteers who need to be respected and appreciated. Most importantly, the candidate will need to be willing to ask for help if they need it.

Challenges to be faced:

  • Maintaining volunteerism as the company grows.

  • Finding new performance opportunities for dancers outside of mainstage shows.

  • Finding and maintaining training opportunities.

  • Establishing and strengthening relationships with other performing arts organizations.

There is no set term for the position of Artistic Director; there will be yearly reviews held by the Board of Directors to ensure that expectations are being met on all sides. During a new AD’s first year there will be an additional review at six months to see how the AD is transitioning into the role.

Interested in this volunteer opportunity? Please send any and all questions and Letters of Intent with current resumes to on or before 10/31/19.
