Vivid Motion, Inc., Portland's "innovative and kinda quirky" dance company, will premiere Dance of War: Legends of King Arthur, a brand new spring dance show, June 5-7, 2009, at the St. Lawrence Arts & Community Center in Portland.
Vivid Motion, Inc., the company that has delighted Portland audiences for the past six years with it’s ever popular and sold out Holiday Burlesque shows, brings an exciting new story show to the stage this spring. In the spirit of The Odyssey, Vivid Motion takes a fresh look at the various King Arthur legends, and brings together a selection to be told as only Vivid Motion can; with a mix of dance styles, choreographers, and music genres.
Director Eric Worthley brings to life the history and drama of King Arthur’s saga: Arthur’s rise from the humble beginnings of a foster child to becoming the King who unifies a land rife with war. Travel with us as we view the machinations of Merlin that guide Arthur, the receipt of Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake; his tragic union with Guinevere, the fairest maiden in all the land, and at last the realized dream of Camelot and the stories of the Knights of the Round Table. Watch as Morgaine’s wrath towards Arthur and Guinevere’s betrayal with the most perfect knight, Lancelot, sends the kingdom into a tailspin. Will Camelot degenerate into the destruction and war of the times before?
Musically there’s something for everyone in this show. With music from such wide ranging talents as Disturbed, Aqua, Fiona Apple, Jane’s Addiction, Eric Clapton, Amy Lee and, a special treat, original music from local musician Cathy Worthley. Choreographers include Ali Berry, Trevor Bean, MJ Emerson, Byron Nilsen, Brigitte Paulus; Gerry Shannon and Emily Zack-Farrell.
Vivid Motion dancers live, work, and play in southern Maine; they range from classically trained professionals to club dancers and enthusiastic novices, and vary from college students to career professionals. Appearing in Dance of War: from Portland, Mark Noyes as King Arthur, Ali Berry as Guinevere, Brigitte Paulus as Morgaine, MJ Emerson as Merlin; Aaron Mitchell of Cumberland as Lancelot.
