Hollywood Dreams

For Immediate Release

Vivid Motion presents Hollywood Dreams, a poignant story about growing up told through dance in the unique Vivid Motion style. April 8-10th at St. Lawrence Arts in Portland. Tickets online at vividmotion.org or (with cash or check only) at Longfellow Books in Portland.

Directed by Byron Nilsen, Hollywood Dreams stars Valorie Lake from Portland Ballet as Holly J. Wood, about to embark on the rest of her life. Her parents want her to stay close to home and go to college, but Holly wants to go to California so she can pursue her dream to be a screenwriter. It is, after all, her life... right?

Andre Demers, a newcomer to Vivid Motion, plays Holly's best friend Tyler, who just wants her to be happy and has his own growing up and coming out issues to deal with. Will Ballou struts his stuff as Jake, the guy that has it all: great looks, great body, smarts and a wealthy family, but can't seem to get the one thing he wants, Holly. Daphne Gerard, who melted hearts as the Snow Queen in Nutcracker Burlesque, gets to freeze hearts in Hollywood Dreams, as Bianca.

The story starts on the last night they all have together before everything changes. It's graduation and Holly has to decide if she'll pack her car to head off on her own, or stay where it's safe. Life is complicated, and should you do what you want or what everyone else wants? How do you grow up? How do you tell the people you love how you really feel without messing everything up (and feeling stupid?). Holly doesn't know what she'll do tomorrow. Tonight, she'll get a good night of sleep, and think it over. Maybe the answers will come to her... in her dreams.

Hollywood Dreams is told through dance, in the unique Vivid Motion style. Come see Holly go through dream after dream as she figures out whether she should stay or she should go. All the craziness and glamour of Hollywood shows up, shirtless men hunting birds and cats through a jungle, a Darth Vader rave, Superman, red carpet paparazzi and nightmares about what could go wrong. With music ranging from classic John Williams themes to Eminem and dance styles ranging from the lyrically emotive choreography of Emily Zack to the crazy-fast hip hop styles of Gerry Shannon, this is not a show to miss.

Sponsored by Fournier's Leadership Karate, The Warren Memorial Fund, Gorham Self Storage, Longfellow Books, The Portland Phoenix, Fun Box Monster Emporium. Choreographers are: Emily Zack-Farrell, Gerry Shannon, Ali Shannon, Catherine Perreault, Brigitte Paulus, Byron Nilsen, Aaron Mitchell, JJ Heald, MJ Emerson and Merrie Cartwright.
